As the capital of the Lone Star State, Austin is one of the largest and fastest-growing cities in the country. More than being an urban hub though, the city has established itself as a vibrant setting of eclectic culture. Austin is known for its live music, bustling night life, and array of eccentricities that sets it apart from other major metropolis in the US. A popular local motto is “Keep Austin Weird” which refers not just to the preservation of its cultural idiosyncrasies but also to the promotion of small and independent businesses in the city.
Austin is home to more than 700,000 residents; a mixture of university professors, students, skilled workers, musicians, government employees, and IT professionals. Austin also has its own share of famous personalities. Some if the well-known Austinites are Lance Armstrong, Sandra Bullock, Kevin Costner, and Michael Dell. The University of Texas is in Austin and so are a large number of technology companies. The city has gained the nickname Live Music Capital of the World for good reason, it has the most numerous live music spots per capita in the entire country.
Austin is also a favorite location for movies, thanks in part to the strong influence of the media department of the University of Texas. Miss Congeniality, Man of the House, Spy Kids, A Scanner Darkly, Secondhand Lions, and The Life of David Gale are some of the films produced in Austin.
